Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" opened to $124.5 million domestically and $264.1 million worldwide over its opening weekend, which ran July 17-19, clearing the $250 million global threshold. The film played in 3,919 domestic theaters and added $139.6 million internationally across 73 markets.
The opening marked Nolan's best domestic debut since 2012's "The Dark Knight Rises" ($160 million) and his largest global opening ever, ahead of "The Dark Knight Rises" ($249 million), "The Dark Knight" ($198 million) and "Oppenheimer" ($180 million). "The Odyssey" also posted the top R-rated opening of 2026 and Universal Pictures' best-ever weekend launch for an R-rated film.
The result came despite public criticism of the film from some conservative commentators and Elon Musk ahead of its release, which did not appear to dent audience turnout. The film's status as the first feature shot entirely on IMAX cameras helped drive premium-format sales, with IMAX screens contributing roughly $51.8 million combined domestically and internationally.
A majority of the Predict Six community, 64%, correctly predicted the film would clear $250 million worldwide in its opening weekend.
