Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., did not announce a date for his return to the Senate before Aug. 5, 2026. On July 27, McConnell released a health update saying he was "working hard" to get back but that he had not been cleared by the Capitol physician to return to the Senate floor, and his office gave no timeline. The 84-year-old senator has been out since a June 14 fall at his Washington home left him briefly unconscious and led to a bout of pneumonia during his recovery.
Pressure on McConnell to clarify his status mounted through late July: on July 28, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, publicly called on McConnell to either "directly and verbally" prove his capacity to serve or resign, and separately asked Senate Majority Leader John Thune to examine the matter. McConnell, who has already said he will not seek re-election in 2026, remained out of the Senate through the Aug. 3 marker cited in some reporting, with no return date given as of Aug. 5. He was later discharged from a rehabilitation center on Aug. 6 to continue recovering at home, still without a firm return date.
