On the Republican side, state Sen. Rick Brattin won a crowded field to become Cleaver's general-election challenger, after President Trump endorsed Brattin in the newly configured district.
Missouri's Republican-controlled legislature redrew the 5th District in 2025, stretching it eastward toward Columbia and pulling in rural counties to convert it into a seat Cook Political Report estimated would have favored Trump by 18 points in 2024. That redistricting drew six Republican candidates into the primary to challenge Cleaver but did not produce a Democratic primary challenger, leaving Cleaver's own nomination uncontested.
