Curt Skoog did not win Kansas's Democratic primary for governor. State Sen. Cindy Holscher won the Aug. 4, 2026 primary with about 49% of the vote, ahead of state Sen. Ethan Corson at 39%, while Overland Park Mayor Curt Skoog finished third with roughly 13%, according to the Associated Press and Kansas Reflector.
Holscher, a two-term state senator known for her advocacy on public education and reproductive rights, built a coalition strong enough to overcome Corson's establishment backing and Skoog's local Kansas City-area base. She now advances to face Republican state Senate President Ty Masterson, who won the crowded GOP primary the same night, in the November general election for the seat being vacated by term-limited Gov. Laura Kelly.
Skoog's third-place finish leaves Kansas Democrats without a Kansas City-area standard-bearer in the fall race, with Holscher instead carrying the party's nomination into a competitive general election.
The result confirms the market resolved "no." The community's vote leaned "yes" (67% on three votes) for Skoog, missing the actual outcome, in which he placed third behind both Holscher and Corson.
