A24's horror film "Backrooms" opened to $81 million domestically and $118 million worldwide during the weekend of May 30-June 1, 2026, topping the domestic box office chart and setting a studio record for A24's biggest opening weekend. The film was directed by Kane Parsons, a 20-year-old filmmaker whose YouTube-based interpretations of the "Backrooms" internet mythology had attracted a substantial online following, and was produced at an estimated budget of roughly $10 million. Mark Duplass served as a producer.
The debut surpassed A24's previous record, held by "Civil War" ($25.5 million in April 2024), by more than threefold, and outperformed the simultaneous opening of "The Mandalorian and Grogu." Parsons' opening weekend is reported to be the largest by any director under 21 years old in domestic box office history. Two-thirds of the Predict Six community did not expect "Backrooms" to top the chart, likely underestimating the grassroots cultural momentum behind the Backrooms mythology and the breakout audience appetite for the project.
