Disney's live-action "Moana," starring Dwayne Johnson and Catherine Laga'aia, opened in North American theaters on July 10, 2026, and led the domestic box office for its opening weekend, finishing atop the July 10-12 chart with roughly $45 million to $50 million from about 3,900 theaters.
The result came despite the film badly missing its own targets. Pre-release tracking had projected a $60 million-plus domestic debut, and some estimates put a possible global opening near $130 million, but the film opened well below those marks and behind the original 2016 animated "Moana's" $57 million debut. Analysts pointed to the timing, coming less than two years after "Moana 2" grossed over a billion dollars worldwide, as a factor blunting demand for another version of the story.
Even with the soft results, no other wide release that weekend came close. Competing new titles, including the horror film "Evil Dead Burn" and the comedy "Burn the Invite," opened well behind Moana's total, leaving it the top film of the weekend by a clear margin.
