Rep. John James won Michigan's Republican gubernatorial primary on Aug. 4, 2026, but not by more than 20 points. The Associated Press called the race for James at 10:24 p.m. that night, and with most votes counted he led businessman Perry Johnson by roughly 15 percentage points, about 49% to 35%, a single-digit-to-mid-teens margin well short of the 20-point threshold in this question.
James, a Trump-endorsed Detroit-area congressman, prevailed despite being significantly outspent by Johnson, a wealthy businessman and former GOP presidential candidate. He advances to face Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who won the Democratic primary, in November's general election in one of the country's most closely watched battleground-state governor's races.
